About Voices for Independence

The mission of Voices for Independence (VFI) is to empower people with disabilities and promote independent living. As a Center for Independent Living (CIL), we provide core services such as advocacy, peer support, skills training, information and referral, and deinstitutionalization.


Position Summary

The Activities and Group Fitness Coordinator plans, organizes, and leads engaging programs, events, and daily activities that foster wellness, community, and enrichment for our Consumers. This position plays a vital role in enhancing quality of life by creating inclusive, meaningful experiences based on the interests and abilities of individuals with disabilities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a monthly calendar of activities and events
  • Lead or assist with daily group activities including cooking, group fitness, arts, music, games, and workshops
  • Coordinate holiday events, themed programs, and occasional off-site outings
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive space that supports peer interaction and independent living skills
  • Collaborate with internal staff, volunteers, and external partners
  • Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, supplies, and budgets
  • Monitor program effectiveness through feedback and engagement
  • Ensure safety and accessibility during all activities
  • Lift and transport activity/fitness supplies as needed (up to 75 lbs)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working in fast-paced environments
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Comfortable working directly with individuals with disabilities
  • 1–3 years of experience in a fitness or wellness center
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1–2 years in recreational programming or fitness leadership
  • Experience working with people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities
  • Culinary experience (food prep, teaching cooking skills, etc.)
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends for special events

  • Occasional travel within the organization’s service area
